Planning donations before a move

A donation plan begins with an organization agreeing to receive the actual items. Check condition, size and timing before treating furniture as a confirmed donation stop within your moving route.

Decide what is suitable to offer

List reusable furniture and household items separately from damaged pieces or general waste. Take clear photographs of the whole item, any wear and useful measurements. Describe the item accurately rather than assuming its age, original price or usefulness to your household establishes acceptance.

Keep the list separate from the furniture intended for the new home. That prevents a piece being packed and moved by default while its donation destination is still uncertain. Identify a decision deadline that fits the property handover.

Confirm the receiving organization’s process

Ask about accepted item types, dimensions, condition requirements and the photographs or details needed for review. Check how drop-off or collection arrangements are made and whether an appointment is required. Use the organization’s current instructions for the actual items you are offering.

Wait for acceptance and keep the confirmation with the furniture list. A pickup request, a moving estimate or a plan to donate does not establish that an organization has agreed to receive a piece. Have an alternative route if the item is declined.

Keep donation and moving scopes distinct

Write the approved destination, the furniture assigned to it and the contact responsible for access. If you want a moving team to handle the stop, include it explicitly in the request with the relevant timing. Additional stops should be reviewed rather than assumed inside a direct house move.

Label accepted donations in words and stage them separately from the main load. Keep removal items on another list. A truck carrying both categories does not make the removal items donations or settle their final destination.

Close the plan before the property handover

Recheck the accepted list if a condition changes or another item is added. Remove old labels when furniture is sold or redirected. Keep any paperwork supplied by the receiving organization with your own records; questions about tax treatment need their own qualified guidance.

Confirm what happens if a piece cannot be received as planned. The useful fallback may be a different approved recipient, another handover or a separately reviewed removal route. Resolve that choice before the house must be empty.

Your working checklist

  • Photographs, measurements and condition accurately recorded.
  • The receiving organization’s current requirements checked.
  • Acceptance confirmed for the actual pieces.
  • Donation, main delivery and removal lists kept separate.
  • A fallback and property-handover deadline identified.

Before confirming the work

Ask the team to distinguish the carrying service from the receiving organization’s decision. That keeps the route review clear without promising charity acceptance, a particular receipt or any tax outcome.
